What are the primary duties of fellows? How are they assigned?

Most of your day will be spent tutoring middle or high school students in small groups in math and/or in English Language Arts (ELA). These tutorial periods are structured class periods where you will be leading instruction or activities with your assigned tutorial groups 4 or 5 times per week. You will also take part in secondary projects that directly impact the academic achievements of students. These projects may include providing in-class or curriculum support, organizing or leading after school clubs or working with our culture team. Roles are decided by matching Fellowship Members’ skills, strengths, preferences and career goals with the needs of the school.

What are the member benefits for the year?

Great Oaks Legacy has 106 AmeriCorps slots for our Fellowship Members. As AmeriCorps members, fellows will also be eligible for AmeriCorps benefits as defined by the AmeriCorps contract including:

  • The Segal Education Award after your full term of service of over $ 5,000.00. The Segal Education Award is good for seven years from the end of service and can be used to repay qualified student loans or for future education at eligible schools. You can find additional information about the Segal Education Award here.
  • Possible forbearance of qualified student loans. Note that interest continues to accrue. However accrued interest on qualified loans is eligible for payment by the National Service Trust.
  • Childcare benefits if you qualify.
  • Member Assistance Program offering services such as counseling and financial planning resources.

Is it required that I live in the provided apartments?

No, it is not required. We know that living with other Fellowship members can ease the transition to a new location and contribute to fellows sense of mission, therefore improving the Fellowship year experience. For those reasons, we generally prefer that Fellowship members live in Teacher’s Village. However, fellows may elect to live offsite. Please note that we are unable to provide any additional monetary benefit if you do not elect to live in Teacher’s Village.

How do you pair roommates?

Fellows will be sent a housing survey close to the start of your term of service to pair roommates. Factors such as gender, cleanliness, personality, interests and sleep schedule will be considered when making the pairings. We aim to place fellows with roommates that match their preferences. However, as always, a certain amount of flexibility will be necessary when living in shared housing.

What is the calendar for next year?

The commitment runs from the beginning of August through the end of June. The school year calendar is typically finalized by the end of June. We will communicate an exact start date as soon as it is known. We generally follow the same calendar as Newark Public Schools (Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring breaks, federal holidays, etc.) with some exceptions. You can also check out our previous school year’s calendar on our page to get an idea of what next year’s calendar will look like like.

How do I apply for the Teacher Residency Program?

Our Fellowship Members who are interested in teaching have the opportunity to apply for our Teacher Gateway Program during their Fellowship Year. The GOLCS Gateway Program aims to develop a pipeline of talented GOLCS teachers who have an invested interest in teaching and preparing all students for college success. The Gateway application is open to GOLCS Corps members, academic support staff and a select group of first year teachers. Acceptance in the GOLCS Gateway Program is contingent on the following: performance status in your current role, a successful interview, and a recommendation from supervisor. More information about this opportunity will be shared during our summer professional development training. For more information about the Gateway Program, please email Michelle Diaz for additional information.

Do I have to interview in-person?

It is preferable that candidates attend an in-person interview at one our campuses. This allows candidates to meet members of our school community, visit our school location and the surrounding neighborhood, as well as work directly with our students. However, we do understand that this may not be possible for everyone and therefore we do offer video conference interviews as an alternative to a school visit.

Can my friends serve with me?

Yes, we love referrals! We offer a referral bonus for anyone that is hired and serves in our Fellowship. Please e-mail [email protected] for details.
